7 Ideas to Lower Your Heating Bill in Kansas City During the Winter

Your house is likely among your most treasured investments. It assists you financially through building equity, and it’s a place to watch your family grow and develop memories, too. When it’s cold, you might also be dealing with growing energy bills.

As a result, finding approaches to lower your heating bill in Birmingham without lowering comfort can feel challenging.

In regard to energy efficiency, homes are like cars. Some guzzle energy while others drink it gradually. Regardless of what type of residence you have, there are ways to end the cold this winter. The Experts are here with seven suggestions to help you stay comfy without breaking the bank.

1. Get a New Your Air Filter

It’s the most cost-effective solution that exists. It’s also the best way to keep your heating system operating smoothly through the winter.

The type of filter and seasonal elements contribute to how frequently you should put in a new one. Soaring allergen counts, pets and residence size might also influence its durability. In most cases, low-priced filters should be changed monthly. Pleated models made with denser material could last three months or longer.

“It’s really the major thing folks forget about,” said Jim Hughes, senior manager of education and training at Service Experts. “The more overloaded the filter is, the less air is able to go through it and actually heat the house. A dirty filter makes your heating system work harder.”

2. Schedule Routine HVAC Service

It’s common to have an Expert come by your home in the spring for AC service. That way, your air conditioner is prepped for the heat.

But don’t forget to schedule an appointment for furnace service before it snows too.

Among other actions, an inspection usually covers:

    • Checking thermostat settings
    • Cleaning and greasing internal components
    • Examining system shutdown and startup processes

Regular service helps lower the likelihood of dealing with an emergency repair in the middle of winter. Some reports have shown as many as 75% of “no heat” calls could have been stopped with standard tune-ups.

3. Check Windows and Doors for Leaks

Windows and doors are a main entry point for frigid air. Sealing window and door frames is an economical method to help keep frigid air where it belongs.

Here’s one test that Hughes suggests.

Latch a door. Is any light visible? If that’s what’s happening, it’s not totally sealed. Adjustments or weather-stripping could be needed.

If your residence has single-pane windows, you might want to consider a dual-pane improvement.

Some homeowners insulate single-pane windows with plastic sheeting.

It’s not a bad option, but dual-pane windows provide enhanced insulation for keeping chilled air outside.

When you install double-pane windows, your energy savings could be 25% or better.

4. Limit Use of Vented Appliances

If you use the exhaust fan during cooking, Hughes suggests against leaving it running for too long.

The same applies to for the dryer. Don’t let it to operate after your clothes are dry.

Any venting appliance or exhaust fan pulls out warm air out and adds cold air. Running these appliances longer than needed will require your furnace to use more energy to manage the unnecessary coldness.

5. Inspect Your Residence’s Edges for Holes

Examine your residence’s exterior. This is the boundary that separates your residence from the weather. If your home has a basement, check for blowing cobwebs or chilly air flowing in close by the edges.

Polyurethane sealers and other options can be bought to fix basement walls allowing air into your house. Another inexpensive tip is to invest foam seals for fixture bottoms, for example ceiling fans, overhead lights or wall outlets.

They’re easy to install and are awesome at blocking cold air in the winter.

6. Evaluate Insulation Levels in Your Attic

It’s worth making sure that you have adequate insulation levels

Hughes advises checking the ENERGY STAR® zone map to find the recommended R-value for your residence’s walls and attic space. This recommendation is formulated on the geographic location where you live.
