So you’ve realized it’s time to upgrade your existing air conditioning system to a more energy efficient system. Good thinking! You’re making a long-term investment in your family’s comfort as well as the decreasing of your energy costs and responsible consumption of energy. While those are all great things there are still a number of things you can do to ready your Kansas City home before you begin the air conditioning installation process.
1. Review the Manual J Heating and Cooling Load
First of all, the AC contractor should have completed what’s called a heating and cooling load calculation. This involved calculation takes into account the home’s structure, roof, windows, direction and location to identify the size and type of equipment needed. Ask to see the load calculation and have it spelled out for you. If the contractor did what’s known as a Block Assessment, or did not perform a load calculation at all, we would strongly recommend choosing another contractor or calling Neal Harris Service Experts at 816-787-0500. Your Kansas City HVAC expert will be able to offer you a full assessment.
2. Clean and Seal Ducts.
Next, have the company clean your ductwork. It’s not a good idea to introduce caked on dirt and dust from a crotchety old duct system to your brand new air conditioning system. The health of your whole system and the quality of the air you breathe kicks off with your ducts providing clean air, so make sure that they are cleaned and properly sealed by the HVAC contractor. If you can’t remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned or have never had them cleaned, have the contractor perform a duct cleaning prior to your new AC installation.
3. Clear a Path.
Prior to the air conditioner installation you will also want to clear the area where equipment will be installed, and make sure it is easy to access. There are stairs, landscaping porches, decks or other objects close to the AC, clear the area as best as you can. Ensure the area is clear of yard waste like big sticks and leaf piles so installation is even simpler. Also make sure to clear away anything else that could get in your installation pro’s way such as garden hoses, rakes, or children’s toys. Make sure pets are caged so they do not get in the way of the installation crew.
