Hot Water When You Want It
A tank heater stores water that’s continuously the right temperature, so it’s available anytime you require it. Capacities vary from 20 to 80 gallons, but most families do well with a 40- or 50-gallon tank.
When the dishwasher, washing machine or shower is working, preheated water is pulled from the top of the tank and flows promptly to where you need it. The water heater then pulls cold water into the bottom of the tank and heats it so more heated water is prepared when it’s needed.
Tank water heaters are typically less expensive to purchase and install than other water heaters. While tankless water heaters are the champions of energy efficiency, a tank heater can still be efficient—notably ENERGY STAR models.
